High school courses require a great deal of reading, writing, studying and test taking. Academic assistance courses focus on helping students build skills to enable them to succeed in their content courses. Study Skills classes assist students in developing the skills necessary to study effectively and productively and will provide practice in the strategies that will allow students to succeed in their classes.
The Study Skills course is based upon the philosophy that some students, if given additional assistance and tutorial help, will learn more and have greater self-esteem in their regular classroom environments. The course offers individualized instruction adapting to a wide range of abilities. The course is designed to improve:
Time Management
Organization
Study Strategies and Planning
Vocabulary Development
Analytical Reading/Thinking/Writing
Test Preparation Strategies
Test Taking Approaches
Reading and Listening Comprehension
Using Graphic Organizers and Other Visual Aides
Reading specialists present lessons that address skills that are necessary for student success in all classes. Strategies are taught using the students’ academic classroom material. Communication with content area teachers provides helpful information about the students in the course; thereby, providing a cooperative effort for student achievement.
Registration is offered to students who are recommended or choose to select the course. Students can register for either every day or alternating days. The course is offered on a Pass/Fail basis: ¼ unit of credit.
